Agentic AI refers to AI systems that operate with agency: perceiving their environment, making decisions, and taking actions within defined boundaries. The term distinguishes a new class of software from the chatbots, copilots, and single-purpose models that preceded it. Where earlier AI waited for a prompt and returned a response, agentic AI monitors, decides, and acts on its own.
The shift is fundamental. Traditional AI is reactive: you ask a question, you get an answer. The limitation was that each agent worked alone.
Agentic AI (2025-2026). The current wave. Agentic AI describes systems where multiple AI agents collaborate, specialize, and coordinate. The “agentic” modifier means the system exhibits agency at a higher level: it plans, delegates across agents, and adapts as conditions change. A single AI agent handles one task. An agentic AI system handles workflows that span multiple tools, multiple roles, and multiple steps. Gartner predicts that 40% of enterprise applications will embed AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 1% in 2024. That growth is driven by the shift from isolated agents to coordinated agentic systems.
What makes AI “agentic”
Four characteristics distinguish agentic AI from the AI tools that came before.

Coordination. This is the characteristic that defines the “agentic” in agentic AI. Individual agents work together. A support triage agent detects a bug report and passes it to an engineering agent. The engineering agent creates a ticket and notifies a project management agent to update the sprint timeline. Each agent has a specialized role, and an orchestrator coordinates the handoffs. The result is a system that handles multi-step workflows end-to-end.
