AI Agent Identity Management: How Agents Get Permissions

Traditional IAM assumes human users. AI agents need different identity primitives, scoped permissions, credential isolation, and revocable access. Here's how agent identity actually works.

Your Slack bot has admin access. Your GitHub integration can read every repo. Your AI agent processes customer data through a shared API key. Nobody reviewed these permissions since setup day.

This is the state of AI agent identity management in most organizations. Not because teams are careless, because the tools for managing agent identity barely exist. IAM systems were built for humans. Agents are not humans. And the gap between what IAM covers and what agents actually need is where security incidents happen.

In February 2026, Microsoft’s Security Blog published a piece arguing that AI agents now need identity just like humans do. They are right about the need. But the solution is not giving agents the same identity model humans use. It is building something different.


The Identity Gap for AI Agents

Every human in your organization has an identity. A username, a role, a set of permissions, a login method, an audit trail. When Sarah from engineering accesses a production database, you know it was Sarah, you know what she accessed, and you can revoke her access if she leaves the company.

Now look at your AI agents.

Your support triage bot connects to Zendesk, Slack, and your internal knowledge base. What identity does it have? Usually, it runs under a service account: a shared credential created during setup. That service account has whatever permissions someone gave it six months ago. There is no role-based access. There is no periodic review. There is no concept of “this agent should only read tickets, not delete them.”

Your GitHub integration bot has a personal access token. Whose token? The engineer who set it up. That engineer left the company three months ago. The token still works. The bot still has access to every repository the departed engineer could reach.

Your AI agent that processes customer emails uses an API key shared across three different tools. If one of those tools is compromised, the attacker gets a key that works everywhere.

This is the identity gap. Humans have identity infrastructure. Agents have service accounts and shared keys. The gap is not theoretical. It is the default state of almost every AI agent deployment.


Why Traditional IAM Does Not Work for Agents

Identity and access management systems (Okta, Azure AD, AWS IAM) are built around a set of assumptions. Every one of those assumptions breaks when you apply them to AI agents.

Agents Are Not Users

Traditional IAM assumes an identity maps to a person. A person logs in, gets a session, performs actions, and logs out. The system tracks who did what and when.

An agent does not log in. It runs continuously. It does not have a session that expires at 5 PM. It processes messages at 3 AM on a Saturday. It does not take PTO. A session-based identity model does not map to something that never stops running.

Agents Act Across Systems

A human user typically works within one application at a time. They open Jira, work on tickets, close Jira, open Slack. IAM systems are designed around this pattern, grant access to Application A, grant access to Application B, each with its own permission set.

An agent works across systems simultaneously. In a single operation, your support Claw might read a Slack message, query a Zendesk ticket, search a Confluence page, draft a response, and post it back to Slack. That is five different systems, five different permission models, five different credential types. All in one action that takes two seconds.

Traditional IAM manages these as five separate access grants with no concept of how they compose together. The agent’s effective permissions are the union of all five grants. Nobody audits the composite.

Agents Need Scoped Tool Access

When you give a human access to GitHub, they browse repos, read code, open pull requests. Their judgment determines what they do with that access.

When you give an agent access to GitHub, it does exactly what its instructions say. If those instructions include “read all repositories and summarize recent changes,” it reads all repositories. Every single one. Including the ones containing secrets, credentials, and security-sensitive configuration.

Agents do not exercise judgment about what they should access. They exercise the permissions they have. If the permissions are too broad, the agent uses all of them. This is not a bug. It is how agents work. The fix is not better prompting. The fix is scoped permissions.

Agents Run Continuously

A human logs out. Their session ends. If their account is compromised, you can lock it and the attacker loses access at the next session expiry.

An agent runs 24/7. If its credentials are compromised, the attacker has access until someone notices and manually revokes the credentials. There is no session to expire. There is no logout event. The compromise window is not hours. It is days or weeks.


What Agent Identity Should Include

If traditional IAM does not work, what does? Agent identity needs four things that most IAM systems do not provide.

1. Scoped Permissions Per Agent

Each agent should have its own permission set. Not a shared service account. Not a human user’s credentials. A dedicated identity with the minimum permissions required for that specific agent’s job.

A support triage agent needs read access to your ticketing system and write access to send responses. It does not need access to your billing system, your code repositories, or your HR platform. Its identity should reflect that.

This is the principle of least privilege applied at the agent level. Not at the platform level, not at the organization level, at the individual agent level. Each agent gets exactly what it needs. Nothing more.

2. A Complete Audit Trail

Every action an agent takes should be logged. Not just “the agent was active”. The specific actions, the specific data accessed, the specific outputs produced.

When your agent reads a customer email, that read event should be logged. When it drafts a response, the draft should be logged. When it sends the response, the send event should be logged. If something goes wrong, you need to reconstruct exactly what happened, in what order, with what data.

Human IAM systems have audit trails. Agent identity needs audit trails that are more detailed, because agents act faster and at higher volume than humans. An agent can perform 500 actions in the time it takes a human to perform 5. The audit trail needs to keep up.

3. Credential Isolation

Each agent should have its own credentials, isolated from every other agent. If Agent A is compromised, the attacker gets Agent A’s credentials. Not Agent B’s. Not the organization’s master keys. Not the credentials of every other agent on the platform.

This sounds obvious. In practice, most agent deployments share credentials. Three agents use the same OpenAI API key. Five agents share the same Slack bot token. The support bot and the engineering bot use the same GitHub PAT. One compromise exposes everything.

Credential isolation means each agent has its own keys, its own tokens, its own secrets. Compromise one, revoke one. The rest keep running.

4. Revocation Without Collateral Damage

When you need to shut down an agent (because it is compromised, misconfigured, or just no longer needed) you should be able to revoke its access without affecting anything else. No shared credentials to rotate across ten other agents. No service accounts that five systems depend on. No “if we revoke this token, three other bots break.”

Revocation should be instant and surgical. Kill the agent’s identity, and only that agent stops working.


The Principle of Least Privilege for Agents

Least privilege is not a new idea. It is one of the oldest security principles: give each entity the minimum access it needs to do its job.

For human users, least privilege is implemented through roles, groups, and permission sets. An engineer gets engineering access. A support rep gets support access. An admin gets admin access.

For agents, least privilege needs to be more granular.

Channel-level control. An agent should only operate in the channels it is assigned to. A support Claw deployed in #support-tickets should not be able to read messages in #engineering-internal. Not because the model is told to ignore those channels, because the agent literally cannot access them.

Tool-level control. An agent with access to Google Workspace should have per-service scoping. Read access to Gmail. No access to Drive. Read/write access to Calendar. Not a blanket “Google Workspace” permission, individual controls for each service.

Action-level control. Read versus write versus delete. An agent that summarizes Jira tickets needs read access. It does not need the ability to delete tickets, modify sprints, or reassign issues.

Time-level control. Some agents should only run during business hours. Some should only respond to messages within a defined window. Permissions that are always-on are permissions that are always-vulnerable.

The more granular the controls, the smaller the blast radius when something goes wrong. And with agents operating at machine speed across multiple systems, the blast radius matters more than it does for human users.


How ClawStaff Handles Agent Identity

ClawStaff was designed around the assumption that every agent needs its own identity. Not a shared service account. Not a human user’s borrowed credentials. A dedicated, scoped, auditable identity for each Claw.

Here is how that works across five layers.

Agent Scoping: Private, Team, Organization

Every Claw has a visibility scope that defines who can interact with it.

  • Private. only the creator can interact with the Claw. Nobody else in the organization can see it, message it, or access its outputs. This is a single-user identity with zero lateral exposure.
  • Team. whitelisted team members share the Claw. The engineering team’s code review Claw is invisible to the sales team. The support team’s triage Claw is invisible to engineering. Each team’s agents are compartmentalized.
  • Organization. any member of the organization can interact, but the Claw is still bounded to the organizational identity. External users cannot reach it.

The scope is enforced at the infrastructure level, not by prompt instructions. A Private Claw is not “told” to only respond to one user. It physically cannot receive messages from anyone else. The communication pipeline filters messages before they reach the model.

Channel-Level Whitelisting

Within its scope, each Claw has explicit whitelists for every channel and integration it connects to. In Slack, you whitelist specific users, channels, and user groups. In Gmail, you whitelist email addresses and domains. In GitHub, access is scoped through the personal access token to specific repositories.

If a message comes from outside the whitelist, the Claw does not respond. It does not see the message at all. There is no prompt to override, no instruction to bypass. The message is filtered before it reaches the agent.

BYOK: Credential Isolation by Default

ClawStaff uses a Bring Your Own Key model. You provide your own API keys for AI model providers, OpenAI, Anthropic, or others. These keys are yours. They live in your provider accounts. You control rate limits, spending caps, and access policies at the provider level.

This matters for agent identity because it eliminates shared credential risk. Your organization’s agents use your organization’s keys. They are not routed through a shared ClawStaff API key that thousands of other organizations also use. If you revoke a key, only your agents are affected. If you rotate a key, you do it in your own provider dashboard.

Each agent’s credentials are encrypted at rest and only decrypted inside the agent’s container at runtime. Agent A’s keys are not accessible to Agent B, even if both agents run in the same organization.

ClawCage: Container Isolation

Every organization’s agents run inside a dedicated ClawCage: an isolated Docker container. This is the enforcement boundary for agent identity.

Inside the ClawCage, agents can only access the resources explicitly granted to them. They cannot read files from the host system. They cannot access other organizations’ containers. They cannot reach network endpoints outside their allowed scope.

If an agent is compromised (through prompt injection, a malicious skill, or a misconfiguration) the blast radius is contained to that single container. The attacker cannot pivot to other agents, other organizations, or the underlying infrastructure.

Container isolation is the identity enforcement mechanism that makes everything else work. Scoping, whitelisting, and credential isolation are policy. The container is the enforcement.

Audit Trail

Every action a Claw takes is logged in the audit trail. Not just “the agent was active”. The specific actions, in order, with timestamps.

  • Which messages the agent received and from whom
  • Which tools the agent called and with what parameters
  • What data the agent read from connected integrations
  • What outputs the agent produced and where they were sent

If something looks wrong, you can reconstruct the full sequence of events. If an agent accessed data it should not have, the audit trail shows exactly when, how, and what it did with that data. This is the accountability layer that makes agent identity auditable.


The Identity Problem Is a Security Problem

AI agent identity management is not a theoretical concern. It is a practical security requirement. Every agent running in your organization is an identity, with access, credentials, and the ability to act on your behalf across systems.

If that identity is not scoped, the agent has too much access. If the credentials are not isolated, a single compromise cascades. If there is no audit trail, you cannot detect or investigate incidents. If you cannot revoke access cleanly, you cannot respond to threats.

Traditional IAM was built for humans. AI agent IAM needs to be built for agents, with scoped permissions, credential isolation, container-enforced boundaries, and granular audit trails.
